My thumbs
posted by nathan

Finally, I've found a place where I can fit in and be myself!Wikipedia picture of clubbed thumbs

See, all my life, my thumbs haven't matched.  My right thumb has always been thick and stubby and short.  It's great for thumb-wrestling (I almost never lose with that thumb), but it looks quite odd.  As a kid I always assumed it was from playing too much Nintendo, but in college a friend told me it was a genetic thing.  Well, I finally did some looking around, and it turns out I'm not alone!

The most common name for it is Clubbed Thumb, (although I prefer "bigtoeitis", as it looks like a big toe on my hand), according to this wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clubbed_thumb (The picture on the right is from wikipedia, but it looks almost exactly like the difference between my thumbs).

There's a blog and community all about clubbed thumbs, telling trivia about them, and letting us know about celebreties that also have clubbed thumbs (Megan Fox is the most recent discovery, I guess).  I also joined the Clubbed Thumb Society facebook group, so I have a place where I'm not alone in my mis-matched thumbness.  There's even a photo gallery where we're all invited to post pictures of our club thumbs.

I feel so....so....at home at last.
